Stuff to do: City of Caterpillar, Dachtoberfest, Grandmaster Flash, Viva RVA Hispanic Music Fest, plus Yo Yo Ma and the Richmond Symphony

City of Caterpillar with Loud Night and Dorthia Cotrell at Richmond Music Hall on Friday, Sept. 30

The return of locals, City of Caterpillar, a screamo/post-hardcore band that broke up in 2003 but has played various reunion shows since then –and more importantly, are releasing their first album in 20 years, “Mystic Sisters” (Relapse Records) the day of this show. It should be a barnburner of a night before the band goes on a national tour. Also on this stacked bill, blistering local rippers, Loud Night, who have the same kind of power “E” had, and evoke memories of “River’s Edge” road music (check out below) plus the great singer Dorthia Cotrell of Windhand fame. For fans of heavy and hard Richmond bangers, this should be a very relaxing way to start your weekend. Doors at 7 p.m. show at 8 p.m. Go to etix to learn if there any tickets left.

Inaugural RVA Dachtoberfest at Delta Hotels on Saturday, Oct. 1

Who do you love? Could it be the lovable dachshund dog breed? Well this here is your party. Hundreds of the familiar weiner dogs will be converging for family fun, with some in costume, some racing, plus there will be vendors, raffles, guest speakers and more. Any and all dogs are welcome to the event, which runs from 9:30 a.m to 4 p.m. at the Delta Hotels Richmond Downtown at 555 E. Canal St. Tickets cost $10 in advance or $15 at the door and benefit the Dachshund Enlightenment Foundation, Inc. Go here for more.

Viva RVA Hispanic Music Festival at Diversity Richmond on Saturday, Oct.1

Rain or shine: Enjoy a day of authentic Hispanic music, food, interactive stations, dance lessons, a drag show, children’s program and exhibitors. Among the performers are Richmond favorites Quatro Na Bossa (who play at 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.), plus Serenata and Kadencia. This event is free (as is parking) but an eventbrite ticket is required. Runs from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Check for updates at their FB page here.

DJ Grandmaster Flash at Hippodrome, Saturday, Oct. 1

While Venture Richmond had to pull the plug on this year’s 2nd Street Festival in Jackson Ward, the headliner for that event, hip-hop original DJ Grandmaster Flash is still going to perform an indoor set at the Hippodrome from 5 to 8 p.m. So all is not lost. Plus it’s free admission with limited capacity. First come, first serve basis. 528 N. 2nd Street.

Yo-Yo Ma with Richmond Symphony, Tuesday, Oct. 4

The internationally acclaimed cellist, one of modern classical music’s few household names, comes to play with the Richmond Symphony, performing Elgar’s cello concerto in E minor, op. 85, plus the Symphony will perform work by Gabriela Ortiz, De Falla, Strauss Jr. and Ravel. 7:30 p.m. Visit richmondsymphony.com for more info.
