Princess Diaries 3: Here’s how to dress like Mia Thermopolis in 2022
Grab your tiara and book your flights to Genovia, Princess Diaries 3 is happening.
Millennials across the globe rejoiced when Disney finally confirmed the news that we’d get a third installment of Mia Thermopolis, almost two decades on.
From ‘trolley people’ to Sandra Oh’s legendary headmistress, the 00s movies were iconic in many ways – and that includes the fashion.
Mia was wearing Dr Martens and leather backpacks long before we were, and let’s not forget the fact that she wore an actual bucket hat to hide her new haircut from her classmates. How 2022 can you get?
Farrah-May Archer Boadi, styling team lead at Stitch Fix UK told Metro.co.uk that Mia was ahead of her time.
She says: ‘Amidst the cucumber-eyed makeovers, quick back seat limousine outfit changes and epic slumber party montages, Mia Thermopolis has some seriously iconic 00’s looks that can be easily replicated and made to be on trend for 2022.’
Here, Farrah-May explains how to dress like a Genovian Princess.
Preppy
With chunky loafers and sweater vests dominating the high-street, it’s no secret that preppy fashion has made a comeback.
And the uniform at Albert Einstein High is perfect inspo for your next look.
Farrah-May says: ‘Mia’s charm shines through even in the least fashion-forward of outfits: her school uniform.
‘Preppy, plaid and perfect for replicating in 2022 – simply ditch the necktie, and rock a blazer with a crisp white shirt and a plaid mini skirt to tap into the ultimate in back-to-school chic.
‘This year, strict dress codes have made a huge comeback thanks to the Y2K revival, with designers such as Miu Miu and Chanel encouraging us to embrace the cool side of ‘preppy’.’
If you don’t want to go for the full preppy look, you have options too.
‘If wearing a pleated mini skirt, or knee high socks feels a bit too risqué for you, why not draw inspiration from Mia by adding a touch of personality to your ensemble,’ says Farrah.
‘Take, for example, the effortless way Mia dons her plaid with a pair of worn-in chunky boots, for a more subtle take on the preppy chic trend.’
Off-duty casual
The ballgowns and tiaras were stunning, but it’s Mia’s off-duty looks that we love the most.
Both Mia and best friend Lily are seen sporting Dr Martens – a beloved footwear choice in 2022 – and Mia was all about throwing her hair up with a scrunchie.
Farrah-May explains: ‘Another of the many reasons why Mia’s style is quite so iconic, is the contrast between her glamorous tiara-adorned ensembles and her casual, off-duty outfits.
‘Mia has perfected the skill by mastering less-is-more in her fashion choices, often by pairing a sturdy pair of blue jeans, with a simple t-shirt and a button down jacket – think Mia and Clarrisse’s memorable trip to the penny pier arcade.
‘You can also accessorise with a headband or finish your ensemble with a classic leather satchel.
‘When styling my Stitch Fix clients in this effortless look, I tend to look towards brands such as Liverpool Los Angeles and Selected Femme, as they combine quality materials with timeless silhouettes, which will stand the test of time.’
Maximalist dressing
With her casual jeans and tee weekend wardrobe, you might think Mia preferred to keep things simple – but take a look at those ballgowns, and you might reconsider.
Bold prints and bright ‘dopamine’ clashing colours were everywhere this year – and wouldn’t look out of place in a Genovian palace.
‘Mia’s most recognisable look is the stunning floral floor length ball gown she wears to Genovia’s Independence Day Ball that feels ever so regencycore,’ says Farrah-May.
In fact, Hailey Bieber even copied this look for her Halloween costume – but this festive time of year is actually the best time to recreate it.
Farrah-May adds: This party season, celebrate maximalism, and reach for puffed sleeves, long gloves and enjoy playing dress up like Mia.
