COLDER temperatures are here which means it’s time to dig out the winter wardrobe – but some things should stay away for good.

For autumn/ winter, little changes from year to year in terms of trends and staples you need to get you through the season.

The Pashmina is officially dated according to our fashion expert[/caption]

For example you can always rely on a winter floral and a knee high boot, but there are a few pieces that have had their day and should be shunned to the back of your wardrobe or be sent to the charity shop.

Here Clemmie Fieldsend rounds up the winter fashion mistakes many make that make your outfits look dated.

Knitted tights

It maybe tempting to opt for cosy knitted tights but our fashion experts says it’s a bad idea[/caption]

Knitted tights creep out of the lingerie drawer when the mercury plummets, but unless you’re skipping off to primary school you shouldn’t be seen in knitted tights.

They had their heyday in the seventies and when we were children but these days technology has moved on.

DATING DON’TS

Do you look common on a date? Expert reveals fashion mistakes you’re making

You can buy thermal tights from M&S for just £8 with the same shine as opaque tights and they’ll keep you toasty and warm.

Beit poking out of the top of Uggs or fringed down the side of a knee-high, fluffy boots haven’t made the Y2K cut.

Wearing a pashmina is a sure fire way to date your look[/caption]

Loved by anyone and everyone from Kate Moss to Kate Middleton, in their heyday a pashmina was a staple for any woman for any season. But the trusty shawl is no more.

Wide, long and thick woolly scarves are your safest bet – and will keep you warmer than a flimsy acrylic pashmina.

Wide Fedora hat

Wide brimmed Fedora hats are all the rage in autumn but our expert suggests you stay away[/caption]

As the leaves change colour and pumpkin spiced lattes appear in every copy shop, you’ll start seeing wide brimmed fedora hats.

However, the look has had its day and has become the butt of every meme and joke – plus one gust of bitter wind and it’s goodbye hat, hello hat hair.

If you’re not ready to let go of headgear, switch up your style to a beanie.

Knitted hats don’t have to be chunky, tea-cosy style bobble hats, you can get a sleek, fine knit beanie that is a minimalist alternative to the felt hat.

Waterfall cardigans

It’s been a long time since a waterfall cardigan was seen on the catwalk or high street[/caption]

Cardigan come blanket, the hybrid knit has its uses in winter for giving you that wrapped up and cosy feel.

However, their look hasn’t been seen on a catwalk or high street for some time and shouldn’t be making an appearance on you this winter either.

As a transitional alternative try a Borg jacket.

They have the soft feel and warmth of a fleece but the sturdiness of a jacket, and they are a hit with designers and influencers a like. Win-win.
