If you go for facials at medi-spas and premium salons that are targeted at lifting and firming of skin, chances are that the Electric Muscle Stimulation (or EMS) technology probably isn’t new to you.
But for the uninitiated, EMS sends pain-free micro-currents to expand and contract muscles in a targeted area, mimicking what happens during a workout. It lifts and sculpts the face so that skin becomes more elastic, and facial contours look firmer and more lifted. It can also be used on the body for slimming and toning effect.
I’ve always been an advocate of this technology and look out for it when I go for a facial, so imagine how pleasantly surprised I was when I found out that Medicube has device called the Age-R Derma EMS Shot, which brings the experience of a professional facial lift treatment to the comfort of my own home!
In fact, socialite and social media personality Jamie Chua has this device in her routine and it has gained popularity since she recommended it in her YouTube video.

Medicube Age-R Derma EMS Shot: What you need to know about it
Medicube, which is endorsed by South Korean top comedian Yoo Jae-suk, is probably a name that those who love K-beauty won’t be unfamiliar with.
South Korea’s top dermo-cosmetic brand, Medicube is known for its comprehensive range of skincare products, including the very popular Red line (for acne and irritation) and Zero Line (for pore management).
The brand also has a line of beauty devices that are designed to deliver premium aesthetic therapy at home, which includes the Age-R Derma EMS Shot, for firming and lifting. These Medicube beauty devices are so popular, they have surpassed 160,000 units in sales within just five months in 2022 alone!
While you may not have heard of the Age-R Derma EMS Shot, it is actually well-known in South Korea because A-list actress Kim Hee-Sun is the ambassador for this device!
Like the rest of Medicube’s devices, the Medicube Age-R Derma EMS Shot is certified by safety federations around the world, including in Europe, USA, Japan, and South Korea.
Using medium-frequency energy, the Age-R Derma EMS Shot helps with muscle relaxing, muscle exercising, facial lifting, contouring, and sculpting, and at a deeper level than other devices you may find in the market. This is because medium-frequency energy can stimulate deeper lying muscles that are responsible for skin elasticity.
Simply use it for 10 minutes every day and you can look forward to results such as improved skin elasticity, firmer skin, as well as less obvious double chin, smile lines, crow’s feet, laugh lines, and saggy brows.
Medicube Age-R Derma EMS Shot review: Trying it for 1 week
To find out if it’s possible to attain anti-ageing results with the Age-R Derma EMS Shot in a week, I tried it for 10 minutes every day and took a photo of myself first thing every morning for seven consecutive days. Read on to see if it works for me!
After using the Medicube Age-R Derma EMS Shot every day for seven days, here are some of the observations I’ve made, which you can also see in the photos I’ve taken:
- The lines between my brows are less tense than before
- My cheek muscles are firmer and more lifted
- Overall facial contours are more lifted and more youthful-looking
- My eye area looks less tired than before
What you can’t see from the photos is that I could also feel that my skin is more taut and lifted than before.
I was impressed that with such a short time commitment per day of just 10 minutes, there could already be significant improvement to the skin condition. It was an easy at-home facial that I could pamper my skin with and it helped to boost my existing anti-ageing routine, so that faster and more noticeable results can be seen.
I can’t wait to continue using the device because I’m confident I’ll see even more obvious results later!
Ease of usage
There are three personalised modes that you can pick from: Slim, Up, and Body. Here are their functions:
- Slim – This mode stimulates skin surface and the middle layer of skin on the face
- Up – This mode pulls and stimulates the inner muscles of the face to improve elasticity and firmness
- Body: This mode is used on the body, including the neck area.
There are also four intensities you can select. I’d recommend that you start from Level 1 at the start and slowly amp up as you get more comfortable with the frequency.
To start using it, apply the Booster Gel on the tips of the device. Then put it to your facial contours and move the device upwards.
I like that the device is easy to use, with just one main button for you to toggle between the modes and to change intensity. I was able to learn how to use the device immediately after spending just minutes reading through the instructions booklet.
How it feels
Just like how a regular EMS facial feels, there is a slight tingling or pulsating feeling at the point where you apply the device on. It was comfortable enough for me to move immediately to Level 2 on Day 1, and by Day 3, I was already on Level 3.
After using the device for 10 minutes, my skin feels taut and firm and there’s no discomfort at all during the treatment nor after it. Each time I use it, it feels like I’ve just gone through a professional facial, except that it’s faster and more fuss-free.
If you’re looking for a more complete routine with professional devices, you can also include these devices into your repertoire:
- Medicube ATS Air Shot, a needle-free device that helps accelerate the absorption of skincare products and maximise its effects, as well as pore care.
- Medicube Age-R Ussera Deep Shot, a collagen-boosting device that stimulates collagen production within your skin so that it can improve the appearance of ageing skin.
Medicube Age-R Derma EMS Shot retails for S$269 and is available at the Medicube website.
