The Moth is a story telling workshop that was launched in 1997, named after moths attracted to porch lights when people gather to share tales. To date, the workshop has staged events where more than 3,000 stories have been told to live audiences across the globe.
The Moth arrived in Kenya four years ago and launched a yearly session with quarterly storytelling training workshops. The stories told on stage are primarily autobiographical and, at times, highly intimate.
“The reason I started the Moth was simple,” says George Dawes Green, an American novelist and the founder of the storytelling organization The Moth “I was tired of being interrupted and of hearing others being interrupted. Go to any party in New York City, and there are vultures ready to jump in before you finish a sentence. I wanted a place where people talk for ten or twelve minutes without interruption.”
On Saturday, November 5th, 2022, the fourth storytelling event shall be happening at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, LRC Auditorium from 6pm to 9pm. The theme for this year ‘Don’t Hold Back #WeMove’ seeks to bring out the bold moves and the power of moving forward.
The personal tales shall focus on the horizon, speaking up, leaving past mistakes behind, taking charge, imagining the future, and discovering the treasure ahead.
The Moth storytelling event brings together people from all walks of life, and the stories paint vivid pictures that take us right into the moments of being they describe. The tales are full of colour and life, though their moods vary greatly. “They’re personal and they’re sometimes intense, or hysterical or mysterious. This year over 500 guests are expected to attend the event, with storytellers within Africa given priority to tell their stories.
This year’s event shall be hosted by Kenyan media visionary and equality activist Adelle Onyango, with stories by five activists who are graduates of The Moth. Details and event registration here.
